Therapy

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Honours Psychology at MacEwan University and earned my Master of Education in Counselling Psychology at the University of Lethbridge. Through my years of education and experience in various settings, I developed an innate interest in understanding our human psychology and how I can provide a space of therapeutic healing and facilitate neuro-affirmative care in psychoeducational assessments.

During our therapy sessions, I am here to hold a space of gentle compassion, curiosity, and safety. To help you feel seen, heard, and understood. When we share space together, my goal is that you feel safe and comfortable to explore your emotions; we can become curious together, share laughter, and work collaboratively towards your goals. I enjoy working with children, adolescents, and adults who experience anxiety, depression, self-esteem concerns, boundary issues, and other mental health concerns.

I believe in working from an evidence-based and trauma-informed lens where I holistically integrate various modalities and training to fit your unique needs. I draw from person-centred therapy while also integrating cognitive behavioural therapy, self-compassion, and eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

Outside of our space together, I value connection and quality time with my family, friends, and my puppy, Ollie.

Hi, my name is Mikyla and I am a Registered Psychologist specializing in helping children, teens, and individuals on their journey to managing and overcoming their mental health concerns. I have completed my Masters in Counselling at the University of Calgary, and also obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Psychology from Concordia University of Edmonton.

I am a compassionate and empathic therapist who truly believes that all people have the strengths and abilities to bring about change in their own lives and are an expert in their own lived experience. I enjoy working with clients who experience anxiety, depression, stress, ADHD, self-esteem, LGBTQIA+ concerns, and trauma. I also have several years of experience working with children, teens, and their families with concerns surrounding mental health including autism, ADHD, trauma, and emotional-regulation.

I am passionate about helping clients achieve their mental health and wellness goals using a person- centred, solution-focused and positive approach. My therapeutic orientation is quite eclectic. In therapy sessions I pull from a mix of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) as well as utilizing self-compassion, mindfulness and strength-based approaches. I also enjoy using art and play based approaches with kiddos and teens.

Navigating mental health concerns can be daunting, and it is often hard to know where to start. As individuals we are wired for connection, and by creating a non-judgemental and safe environment I hope to establish a connection with you, and/or your child, that allows us to work collaboratively and find solutions together. We all have a story to tell, and I am excited to hear more about yours.

When I am not working I enjoy spending time at the dog park with my husband and our dog Izzy, visiting my friends and family in the mountains where I grew up, or attending a yoga class!

My path in life wasn’t always clear to me. During my childhood, I tended to fleet from one fanciful career idea to the next. Perhaps I would be a world-renowned journalist or maybe a five-star chef. At one point I was convinced I would live on a compound and make organic soaps. While none of those plans came to fruition, sitting in my first undergraduate psychology class, something “clicked”. I was hooked and spent the next several years pursuing all things psychology.

I completed an undergraduate Honours degree in Psychology and immersed myself in as many research and clinical experiences as possible. I went on to pursue my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in the United States, training as a generalist psychologist with experience in assessment and treatment with individuals across the lifespan. My doctoral internship was completed at Emory University School of Medicine where I worked with individuals experiencing co-occurring physical and mental health concerns. Cumulatively, these experiences have made me a well-rounded clinician who is able to work with a wide range of clients and presenting concerns.

Currently, I hold a position as a Mental Health Consultant with CASA’s Community Geographic Team. In this role I offer training, consultation, and supervision to clinicians in rural Alberta and the Northwest Territories. I previously held a position as the Clinical Lead for CASA’s Psychoeducational Assessment and Consultation team, providing complex assessment and psychological intervention for children and teens presenting with a range of mental health concerns. I also supervise master’s and doctoral level students from the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary. I maintain a small private practice focusing on psychoeducational assessment and psychological intervention for children and adults. Therapeutically, I practice from a cognitive-behavioural framework but integrate varied strategies based on the needs of the client. Some of my areas of therapeutic interest and expertise include anxiety, depression, ADHD, parent management training for oppositional behaviour, and mindfulness-based interventions for managing emotions. I also provide parent coaching and direct therapy for young children with diagnosed or suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder using the Early Start Denver Model.

Personally, I’m married to a kind and hilarious man. We love to travel and are working on a plan to visit 50 countries by our 50th birthdays. We have a young son who keeps us busy and reminds us about the beauty and wonder in very ordinary things.
